I Am Called Man Utd: This Superfan Who Struggled to Alter His Identity

Ask any Man United fan who is older concerning the significance of that fateful day in May 1999, and they will tell you that the night was life-altering. It was the moment when injury-time goals from Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær secured an stunning come-from-behind victory in the European Cup final against Bayern Munich at the Camp Nou. That same night, the existence of one United fan in Eastern Europe, who recently died at the 62 years old, changed forever.

Hopes in a Bygone Era

The fan in question was given the name Marin Levidzhov in his hometown, a community with a tight-knit community. Living in the former Eastern Bloc with a love of football, he longed to legally altering his identity to… the Red Devils. Yet, to adopt the name of a football club from the capitalist west was an unattainable goal. Any effort to do so during the socialist era, he would undoubtedly have been arrested.

A Vow Made Under Pressure

A decade after the fall of the regime in Bulgaria – on the unforgettable final – Marin's personal goal edged closer to fulfillment. Viewing the match from his humble abode in Svishtov and with the score against them, Marin swore an oath to himself: if United somehow turned the game around, he would go to any lengths to change his name that of the club he loved. Then, the impossible happened.

A lifelong wish to walk the halls of the famous stadium came true.

Years of Judicial Challenges

The next day, Marin consulted an attorney to state his extraordinary desire, thus beginning a long, hard battle. The parent who inspired him, from whom he had gained his fandom, was no longer alive, and the 36-year-old was residing with his mom, taking on various types of work, including as a laborer on minimal earnings. He was struggling financially, yet his goal turned into a fixation. He rapidly evolved into the talk of the town, then was featured globally, but many seasons full of court cases and discouraging rulings lay ahead.

Copyright Hurdles and Partial Victories

Marin’s wish was denied early on for copyright reasons: he was barred from using the title of a world-famous brand. Then a local judge allowed a compromise, saying Marin could change his first name to the city name but that he was not to use United as his family name. “But I don’t want to be associated with just a place in Britain, I want to bear the identity of my beloved team,” Marin stated during proceedings. The struggle continued.

Companions in Adversity

Outside of legal proceedings, he was often tending to his pets. He had plenty of them in his back yard in Svishtov and loved them as much as the Red Devils. He christened them after team stars: including Ferdinand and Rooney, they were the most famous cats in town. The one he loved most of his close friends' nickname for him? One named after David Beckham.

He was often seen in full club regalia.

Progress and Integrity

Another victory was secured in court: he was granted the right to append the club name as an recognized alias on his personal papers. But he remained dissatisfied. “I will continue until my entire name is Manchester United,” he promised. His story soon led to commercial propositions – a proposal to have supporters' goods branded with his legal name – but even with his monetary challenges, he declined the proposal because he did not want to profit from his favourite club. The club's identity was inviolable.

Dreams Realized and Lasting Tributes

A film was made in that year. The filmmakers made his aspiration come true of experiencing the Theatre of Dreams and there he even met the Bulgarian striker, the national team player on the team's roster at the time.

He inked the club badge on his brow at a later date as a demonstration against the legal rulings and in his final years it became increasingly hard for him to persist with his fight. Job opportunities were scarce and he suffered the death of his mother to Covid-19. But he managed to continue. By birth a Catholic, he underwent baptism in an religious institution under the name his desired full name. “At least God will know me with my true identity,” he would frequently remark.

Earlier this week, his life came to an end. Maybe at last the club's determined supporter could finally find peace.
