‘It appears magical’: does light therapy actually deliver clearer skin, healthier teeth, and more resilient joints?

Light-based treatment is certainly having a surge in popularity. Consumers can purchase illuminated devices targeting issues like dermatological concerns and fine lines along with aching tissues and gum disease, recently introduced is an oral care tool enhanced with miniature red light sources, described by its makers as “a major advance in at-home oral care.” Internationally, the industry reached $1 billion in 2024 and is forecast to expand to $1.8 billion by 2035. There are even infrared saunas available, where instead of hot coals (real or electric) heating the air, the infrared radiation heats your body itself. According to its devotees, it’s like bathing in one of those LED-lit beauty masks, boosting skin collagen, soothing sore muscles, reducing swelling and persistent medical issues as well as supporting brain health.

Understanding the Evidence

“It appears somewhat mystical,” observes a Durham University professor, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Certainly, certain impacts of light on human physiology are proven. Sunlight helps us make vitamin D, needed for bone health, immunity, muscles and more. Natural light synchronizes our biological clocks, additionally, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and preparing the body for rest as darkness falls. Artificial sun lamps frequently help individuals with seasonal depression to elevate spirits during colder months. Clearly, light energy is essential for optimal functioning.

Different Light Modalities

Whereas seasonal affective disorder devices typically employ blue-range light, the majority of phototherapy tools use red or near-infrared wavelengths. During advanced medical investigations, including research on infrared’s impact on neural cells, determining the precise frequency is essential. Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation, spanning from low-energy radio waves to short-wavelength gamma rays. Therapeutic light application employs mid-spectrum wavelengths, the highest energy of those being invisible ultraviolet, then visible light (all the colours we see in a rainbow) and finally infrared detectable with special equipment.

Ultraviolet treatment has been employed by skin specialists for decades to treat chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and vitiligo. It works on the immune system within cells, “and reduces inflammatory processes,” notes a skin specialist. “Considerable data validates phototherapy.” UVA goes deeper into the skin than UVB, whereas the LEDs we see on consumer light-therapy devices (typically emitting red, infrared or blue wavelengths) “tend to be a bit more superficial.”

Safety Considerations and Medical Oversight

UVB radiation effects, including sunburn or skin darkening, are well known but in medical devices the light is delivered in a “narrow-band” form – meaning smaller wavelengths – which decreases danger. “It’s supervised by a healthcare professional, so the dosage is monitored,” says Ho. Most importantly, the devices are tuned by qualified personnel, “to confirm suitable light frequency output – different from beauty salons, where it’s a bit unregulated, and wavelength accuracy isn’t verified.”

Commercial Products and Research Limitations

Red and blue LEDs, he says, “don’t have strong medical applications, but they may help with certain conditions.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, improve circulatory function, oxygen absorption and dermal rejuvenation, and stimulate collagen production – a key aspiration in anti-ageing effects. “The evidence is there,” says Ho. “Although it’s not strong.” Regardless, given the plethora of available tools, “we’re uncertain whether commercial devices replicate research conditions. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, proper positioning requirements, if benefits outweigh potential risks. There are lots of questions.”

Specific Applications and Professional Perspectives

Early blue-light applications focused on skin microbes, bacteria linked to pimples. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – even though, says Ho, “it’s commonly used in cosmetic clinics.” Individuals include it in their skincare practices, he says, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we advise cautious experimentation and safety verification. Unless it’s a medical device, oversight remains ambiguous.”

Innovative Investigations and Molecular Effects

At the same time, in a far-flung field of pioneering medical science, researchers have been testing neural cells, identifying a number of ways in which infrared can boost cellular health. “Nearly every test with precise light frequencies demonstrated advantageous outcomes,” he says. It is partly these many and varied positive effects on cellular health that have driven skepticism about light therapy – that it’s too good to be true. Yet, experimental evidence has transformed his viewpoint.

Chazot mostly works on developing drug treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, though twenty years earlier, a doctor developing photonic antiviral treatment consulted his scientific background. “He designed tools for biological testing,” he explains. “I remained doubtful. The specific wavelength measured approximately 1070nm, that many assumed was biologically inert.”

Its beneficial characteristic, however, was that it travelled through water easily, allowing substantial bodily penetration.

Cellular Energy and Neurological Benefits

Additional research indicated infrared affected cellular mitochondria. Mitochondria produce ATP for cell function, generating energy for them to function. “Every cell in your body has mitochondria, particularly in neural cells,” says Chazot, who prioritized neurological investigations. “Studies demonstrate enhanced cerebral circulation with light treatment, which is always very good.”

Using 1070nm wavelength, cellular power plants create limited oxidative molecules. In low doses this substance, says Chazot, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, preserve cell function and eliminate damaged proteins.”

These processes show potential for neurological conditions: antioxidant, inflammation reduction, and pro-autophagy – autophagy being the process the cell uses to clear unwanted damaging proteins.
