No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
