Wonder Man Trailer Unveils Marvel's Most Meta Series To Date
The Marvel studio is aware that audiences might be experiencing some superhero fatigue, so they've decided to incorporate this exact idea into their upcoming superhero show.
That's right, the first preview for Wonder Man has been released, and it promises a self-referential angle on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The trailer, which premiered on Oct. 10, also subtly pushed the Wonder Man launch date back from its initial end of 2025 window into January 2026.
Why one more superhero film? Everyone is tired of superheroes. Why go see them in the cinema? Wonder Man spoke to me on a profound level. There is an chance to shock audiences. To reinvent the whole category of storytelling.
The reporter responds: "Have you considered about the cast?"
The trailer then transitions to lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's viewing the interview on his phone, and the preview concludes.
What We Know About Wonder Man
We were previously aware that Wonder Man would be a self-referential interpretation on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, a film star who transforms into a super-powered being (the hero Wonder Man).
The rest of the cast features actor Ben Kingsley returning as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (aka Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's manager Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed returning as Department of Damage Control officer P. Cleary.
Marvel's Self-Referential Comedy Approach
We don't know much else about the storyline of Wonder Man, but it's clear that Marvel plans to laugh at its own tropes.
In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine, it seems like the production company is all in on meta-humor. Will that work without the celebrity appeal of its previous leads? Only time will tell.
