Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
